Write two sentences, pause for several minutes, write two sentences, pause for several minutes, write two sentences, pause for several minutes…

I’m trying to write a “scared” scene. By which I mean that one of my characters is scared, and in reading it you’re scared too.

By golly that’s hard! I’m sifting through the thesaurus so often I’m considering bookmarking it, trying to find just the right turn of phrase and twist of adjective. Of course, working so hard at it probably means that this will be the part that makes me bash my head against the floor when I go to edit it, but that doesn’t mean I shouldn’t try now! (Doesn’t it?) I want it to be good, even while I’m despairing entirely. ^_^
Anyhow, back to my eight hundred words of pain and suffering. By which I mean MY pain and suffering, my character is only going through a little dread. Mwahahahah. Ahem.
I”m gonna give up on it soon…..

  1. I completely understand what you're going through! It is very hard to compose scenes where you want the reader to feel a character's dread or even sadness.

In cases like that, I know I try to recall what I'd be like in that situation. I try to hone it on what kind of noises I'd hear or what illusions my eyes might play on me if I were in that situation. I try to be as sensory as I can.

It's tough. Don't beat your head too much though! Write it down and then if need be, have someone read it and see if it conveys exactly what you want. If not, you can always go back and revise. If it does…well that's a good thing, yes? My husband is guinea pig for these types of things :)!

  2. Sensory imput, hmmm. Of course this would be the one where I put my character through partial sensory deprivation. 😀 I really do excel.

Thank you for the kind words! My sister knows I got all sqee'y over the news that someone other than me or my best friends actually reads my blog. ^_^
